The Chandeleur

I took a little time off instagram in the month of January, it was really nice but now I feel glad and happy to pick up on posting and checking in with my favourite fellows, I’ve really missed it!

Incidentally, the day of my instagram return also was the French chandeleur, the day we celebrate return of the light and the sun and lengthening days. And the crepes! I’ve deliciously smoked my little kitchen in crepes and butter steam, we had eggs and cheese with creme fraiche for mains and chocolate spread for dessert. In the old days it was customary to leave a crepe on top of the bulky kitchen dresser for good luck but then a) I don’t flip my crepes for fear of making a fool of myself and b) the top of the kitchen dresser is the New Cat’s habitat, she’d in all probability eat our luck without making a fuss. I scraped some Palo Santo up there, this should work as well, won’t it!

We’ve done some serious logging with friends over the weekend and I made another attempt at pot au feu, striving at perfecting the art of this possibly Frenchest of all French dishes, it’s a labour of a lifetime but I’ll write up the current state of the how to for you maybe next time I’m showing my face here. For dessert we had a classic, poached pears with chocolate sauce. It’s such a wonderful feeling to open a jar of homemade preserves, knowing I can see the pear trees from the room I’m restoring and which will in (hopefully) due time be my study. More on this another time!
