#6 Les Poissonchats Wondrous Advent Calendar – Saint Nicholas

There’s something beautifully nostalgic in believing.

Believing, nowadays, has gotten a bit of a doubtful reputation, associated with being unscientific, naive and narrow minded. Which in turn is probably the reason why people are so very much obsessed with it. Believe in magic, believe in mindfulness, believe in this and that and after all believe in oneself which has become a mantra. There’s a lot one has to do in order to believe all this while at the same time being a little ridiculed.

When really truly believing comes naturally. There’s nothing one has to do about it. When I was a child I found the question whether or not I believed in Saint Nicholas rather an odd one. Odd in the sense that a tangerine is a tangerine and the moon is the moon, what’s the point then to think about it. I didn’t have to tell myself five times a day that I believed in him, that I truly believed he lives in a lodge deeply buried in the forest with his animals. Because precisely, whether or not I personally believed didn’t change that, in the deepest of the woods, there is this wonderful magical place, where an old man lives with his animals and he knows everything, and it’s beautiful and it’s ever so cosy and nothing in the world will ever stop his generosity and kindness. How about that.

It was just natural, a given. That’s true enchantment, isn’t it?

*This is Les Poissonchats Wondrous Advent Calendar! Advent calendars are a big tradition where I come from: every day until Christmas Day you prepare a small gift for a loved one, fourandtwenty little surprises. Advent calendars come in beautifully old fashioned prints on cardboard, extra glitter and glory, and each day there’s a little perforated window waiting for you be opened. Others are more elaborate, pretty baskets filled with twenty four numbered parcels, red velvet ribbons and sprigs of fir. The one I’m making for you this season is a different one altogether, it comes in digital form. Unless specially marked, all content is hand-stitched by myself, lovingly compiled and written for your amusement.

  1. I still believe! My belief is like yours that enchantment and forests go together. No matter what name he has he is a good person who does good to those who believe in him.
